Dovakorn, UNICORN BORN

Well that's it. Very last doodle of the year, drawn at 11 at night on new years eve. I did it. The feeling of accomplishment is insurmountable. Actually that's a lie, it's pretty mountable. I took my notebooks with me on New years to share with everyone. It was fun flicking through them. Matt commented that it just felt like the other day when he remembers me publishing each one. It's amazing how much memory is attached to each drawing. 2011 will probably go down as one of my most remembered years because of these drawings. I'll probably spend the next couple days feeling guilty I'm not doing doodles, and have an overwhelming urge to post all the time.

A year of Doodles & Sketches
Thanks to everyone who supported me over the year and took the time to log in and check out what i've been drawing. I probably couldn't have done it (as well) without you all.
The blog isn't dead by the way. I'll continue to post drawings, comics, and anecdotes as they come along. The bare minimum will probably be about 1 a week. I have a couple of fun projects knocking around in my head and in word files that I may share with you over the next little while. I hope you guys like Blobby People. Oh yeah, I totally did a collection of all the official blobby strips from this year. You can check 'em out over in the library. Or just check it out right here.

Flotsam and Jetsam Pt.2

There are 5 Femurs in this picture. Try not to get them mixed up with Gamerlad. This one goes from May to midway through September.
Wow, this is kind of a little emotional. Second to last doodle ever. After tomorrow I wont be obliged to post every day ever again. It kind of feels like I'm going to be losing a friend or something.

Flotsam and Jetsam

This picture contains objects found in each of the doodles done from January to the end of April. It's really for anyone planning on going through my doodles at the end of the year to get a good round summary. There are four drawings of Femur in this drawing. You should only have a little bit of trouble finding one of them I think.

Floating Island Birthplace

There exists a crater in the blobby world. It's common knowledge that this crater was not created by an explosion or even a natural occurence. An Alchemist known only as Egamat created an elixer, that when digested would cause the user to float away from the world, as if repelled by gravity. It didn't really take off in the market. Most people were afraid of the cold embrace of space waiting just above them. Egamat was left with a huge pile of the stuff. He couldn't get rid of it. He couldn't leave it lying around, who knows what sort of pickle someone might get themselves into if they drank any of the stuff. He couldn't dump it in the ocean either. What if it had even a small effect on all the wildlife, it would float out of the water and drown in air. So he dumped it in some plains. It spread through roots and crevices's, saturating the land around the dumping ground. A few weeks later clumps of world started to break off and float away. There was enough uncontaminated earth on the clots that they wouldn't float away in space, so they just hang out there in the sky either crumbling away or being held together by trees and things that grow on them.

I gots a Stratagaaaaaaay

Read the title in Forest Gumps voice.
I should probably leave Paul alone now, He's never done anything to me. And I'm pretty much over hearing about the whole thing. But at the moment he just happens to be a source of cheap jokes for me. He should probably stop alternating between tough talk and plea's of mercy. It makes very little strategic sense for making people calm down. If he quiets down and lets the local memeries thrash the concept to death he might be able to continue on unhindered.

Paul Christoforo

Over the last couple days we've been watching internet history in the making. This guy Paul has been a bit of an imbecile. And if there is one thing the internet just loves to hate, it's imbeciles. He's lost what little credibility he had, which wasn't to big a deal. Someone had already made a site about how much of a dick he was well before any of this went down. He's also lost his contract with N-Control. Who knows what will happen to his company. He's probably gonna rename it and move his (willing) clients over. Perhaps he should change his own name as well... And learn how to type like a 38 year old.
It's nice to see the little guy win one for a change. As Nate has said "we may be one little person out of a million, but in this age, one person can have a loud voice too!"
If we can do this, surely we can repeal something like THIS.
I'm kind of wondering if their should be a website dedicated to people ratting out assholes in the industry. I know some of my friends who are trampled on by their bosses at New World in Orewa doing downright illegal things with their employees there. Maybe Penny Arcade will help us. EVERYONE QUICK! Deluge Penny Arcades with our plights! They will be our saviour!

One more Nate quote, just because I thought it was so good.
"Not to be a grammar nazi but shit, how the fuck did you get to be the president of your own ass let alone a company?"

Bag System

I don't know if this applies to all girls, but it does to this one. She also has an infinite bag that contains all bags with bags in them. To complete the bagging process she must also place the infinite bag inside itself. She did. It also contains a simplier answer to Bertrand Russells paradox
So there.

Twice the Crumpet

Just a random line that I had rolling around.
Solar Fields recently released a new album. A little more chilled out than his earlier work. I'm not sure if the video is official or not. I recommend you go draw or something while listening to it. Ambience is background music, not foreground entertainment music. Solar Fields is the artist that created the music for Mirrors Edge. A game that needs a sequel badly. Seriously Dice, You can do this. Please.. please.. please.

Moving on Symbolism

For Cursive Illiterates: I threw all her old letters away at the hill we used to come to when I was a kid. I could finally move on.

I watched "Shrink" the other day. At the end the girl throws all her old movie tickets away on the Hollywood mountain in front of the big ass sign. She does it as some sort of "I'm moving on from the death of my mother" thing. All I could think about was how anal authorities were about the Hollywood sign in Banksys "Exit Through the Gift Shop".

Panic Stripping

Panic stripping is a style that was pioneered by people with bugs in their clothing. It was taken to a mainstream audience in the 80s but never caught on due to its disturbing nature. Most stripper schools frown upon the style due to its "unprofessional nature". Despite opposition on all sides it continues to be a widely practiced style in the more progressive strip clubs.

Slavery's a Career

Mid conversation between me and Jonathon. I would link his name somewhere but I don't really know where he hangs out on the internet. Maybe this will do. Jonathon.
Next up on the gaming agenda is Real Myst. We figure if we double team it we might actually stand a chance of getting through the game. For those that don't know, Myst was one of those first games that really took a step forward in the first person view. My brother was telling me about how back in the day it looked real. Like, it wouldn't get any more real than that. Today we look at it and see this. Which is technically the same thing we saw then, but now we have comparisons like crysis to hold it up against.
The game is a puzzler, has a decent cult following, and what looks like a pretty sweet story from what we've gathered from the first couple hours of gameplay.

Bags It Pt.5

So we finished killing all the bosses on Terraria. I'm sitting on 57 hours gameplay, while Matt's on 82 hours. He layed down a lot of the groundwork for us to get decent armour and weapons. We haven't quite got the end game armour, but it's just a matter of killing the bosses a couple more times.
The game has an intense difficulty curve. After you get half way through the game you go into hardmode, unlocking new ores, weapons, and baddies. You may think you're pro with your Molten armour, but as soon as hardmode strikes you may as well be naked for all the good it does you. Enemies laugh when faced with your chakrams and sunfury. But if you can last long enough you'l slowly be able to claw your way to the top again.
Have a nice day fighting off those snowmen. Cause it will take you about a day the first time through..

Purity Ring

I mentioned Purity Ring a couple posts back, but have decided to come back to them again since I'm finding their songs so kick ass. I messed around with the background a lot to try and get a raw live vibe going. Hope that comes across in the final product. The chick is Megan James, the singer of the band.

Merry Christmas Face

Christmas Girl: 2009 2010 2011 2012
Ha, and you thought I had forgotten it was christmas! Can't escape my attention that easy. I surprise myself to find that this is the third year I have done a crazy face christmas girl. This is the first one that isn't completely digital. I'm not even sure why I started doing these. I think it just seemed like a funny idea. Man, looking at the 2010 post I was complaining about my tablet problem. Have I really been bothered by it that long? What's everyone being doing each christmas??
I got the art book for the Tintin movie which I believe is opening today. It's gonna be fun, I can feel it in my fringe.

Walking Your Island

A Pinata Island has to grow up ya know!
I have to say, lots of exciting things are coming out at the moment in the movie world. I'm not gonna bother telling you to go check out the Hobbit trailer. Your resident LOTR nut has already shown it to you twice. Yeah, we all have one of those at least. To be honest all my friends (including me) fall into that category. But anyway, turning your attention away from movies for a second, Toh Kay has done an album full of Streetlight Manifesto songs acoustically. Listening to them just amps me up for the double time action of a proper streetlight song. Anyway, give it a listen, its great for when you just want to mumble along and not jump up and down.
Sorry it's a static youtube vid. I seem to be tripping over more torrents and downloads than I do music plugins and samples of this album. =(

Bags It Pt.4

Strangely I post this moments before I heard about the Promethius trailer. What's that you ask? That in fact, is a prequel to Alien, the franchise that stoked my hunger for Sci-fi horror and defined an entire genre. It doesn't look like it has the cramped survival horror feeling of the original, but I'm sure Ripley Scott (The original director) will treat it with all the care any big director would treat his baby franchise. Oh wait, crap.
Check it out for yourself.

Three Day Shirt

So I went away for a couple days to Mangawhai. There was a batch down there owned by Robby. He was taking his girlfriend Ayano (I hope that's how you spell it) down there to show her how kick ass New Zealand is. I managed to burn my legs off in the sun, a tradition I hold to each summer.
I mentioned it on G+, but I also stayed true to another tradition of mine which is snorting unlikely substances. This time straight whiskey. I have to say it's by far the worst thing I have tried so far. It feels like your brain has been lit on fire or kicked in the head by a mule with a newly forged (heated) shoe. My eye also turned red and cried for itself and it's self destructive host. I usually make a point of not reacting if something is in the realms of tolerability, but this had me flailing around clutching my face.

Soldier Sketch

This is just a random sketch. One of those ones that you draw based off a squiggle done in the middle of the page. Becky did a squiggle which is now the pauldron. I started off thinking about it taking on a more sci-fi theme, but then I changed it half way through to be more of a Skyrim thing instead.
Here's some sweet skating for your pleasure. Mostly vert stuff, not to much fun street stuff at all.

With a Swish

She hardly blinked once. A recounted true story. The joys of being an electrician working on council housing.
I might take a short break from uploading and check out the latest Skyrim patch. See if the dual processor business has any effect on how it runs on my machine.

Bags It Pt.3

It's a very 80s set background isn't it? Kinda reminds me of those ceilings that are all spackly and have something glittery in them. Or maybe it reminds me of "The Nanny".
Oh yes, yeah, for those of you who went and listened to the D sides album of Gorillaz, there's a reference to it in this comic.
This is the last strip on my current book. I have a few pages left inside it. But since the back cover has fallen off I have wanted to leave a few pages as a buffer so the drawn on ones don't get crunched up. As is the tradition I have scanned the inside covers. This book has been around the longest, and I'm kind of glad to have been done with it. As I mentioned earlier its back cover fell off after I stamped on it by mistake. It's been held together with electric tape since then.

I got the Resistance 3 sticker from uni. I found the "deep" one in town somewhere. The skull one is a stencil sticker I found outside of Armageddon at the ASB Showgrounds. And the bottom left is my phone number in case it got lost. I'm not sure how anyone would contact me though since no one I know can actually read my blocky writing.

the "Cure Kids" sticker I got on the World Cup opening for donating to the appeal. I made a deal where if they stuck a sticker on me I would stick one on their bucket. I did. Top right is fairly self explanatory. I voted this year, woo. "Colour Fades" is a band sticker that's been appearing around Henderson a couple months back. The "Vintage Addict" QR code came from K Road. "Ninja Bears" was scored inside Armageddon after Becky Bought a bear.

Bags It Pt.2

The archeologists are at it again, proving once again that they are in fact just plain old treasure hunters rather than actual archeologists. Everyone knows that there's always a map inside ancient artifacts. It never seems to occur to them that the object itself is worth tons, and smashing it like a neanderthal is only one of many options for getting the map out.

Squander Time

So I traveled back in time. Despite their efforts they were unable to get any useful information out of me. Our scientists had accounted for this eventuality and decided that they would send back "academics in training". Thus the student time travelers were inducted into the sci-traveling programming. The only information we are knowledgeable in is where cheap junk food is, how gay our lecturers are, and when the end of term is.

Download the Internet

This reminds me of a recent scandal between Megaupload and Universal Music. The other day Megaupload had a popup saying that lots of music industry people were totally stoked with the service and all these statistics about why it was such a pro place to be. Today I read this. I can't be bothered summarizing, but check it out. Why did you pull such a noob move Universal? You just gave more advertising to them. No such thing as bad publicity. Publicity just makes things more public. And the more publicity something has the more people know about it (Repeat sentence with different wording). And from there people decide whether they like the product or not. And if it's a bad product then people won't use it. So as we can see there is no such thing as bad publicity, just bad products or choices.

Never Picked Up

This isn't a true tale. It is just a comic taking a jab at me not having a licence to carry my gratefully ass around.

Run Over Dog

Don't worry, it lived. And learnt. So it came out as a positive thing I guess. I've started to notice that my family is a "cat family". Dogs are just far to inconvenient. We love them. We'll give them cuddles and pat them. But screw keeping one long term. At least cats have the decency to poo on someone elses lawn and hide it well enough. Oh, they don't count as real cats if they aren't friendly.

The Baby Wars

So yeah, based on true things happening, but not a true conversation. What are the chances right? It's due at the end of february, so if we wind the calendar back a couple months and figure out what holiday thing was happening then...

More Stress Please

More or less a true story. That's my Mum and Dad there. Don't tell them about this though, Christmas is on its way you know what I mean?

Gun Concept

Hand an idea for a gun, so I drew it... Then I took an arrow to th-
Yes, that sentence doesn't deserve to be finished, because many many people before me have already finished it. Ha, just keeding! -e knee.

But hardly anyone will ever go for that quote, even if they can find it.

Bags It Pt.1

Just one of many times when bagsing something becomes inappropriate. Other times include dashing in front of someone as they make their way into a public toilet and shouting "THEY'RE ALL MINE!"
Another famous example is when John Key responded to John Banks that "You can't be prime minister because I already infinity Bagsed it." John Banks tried to respond with a "double infinity" invocation but was shut down by judges for being impossible. Banks took this news gracefully and stood down as party leader, quickly being replaced by David Shearer, who is well known for being excellent at peaknuckle and Mercy.

Itchy In Space

I wanted to write a comic that everyone could relate to. Something everyone would come across in daily life and recognize immediately. It's always reassuring when you realize everyone has the exact same problem. You know the ones. Like when you go on the internet one day and realize everyones obsessed with My Little Pony. What the hell man? I know we as a community aren't very high on the culture scale, but seriously, we can do better than this.

A Machine

There is a very realistic interpretation of myself for you. Biceps the size of breakfast bowls. Perfect teeth. And of course, a robot hand. Because I would need one at the rate I'm pooping out doodles at the moment. It's the only logical explanation. To be honest this is my own personal victory doodle. I was listening to Beiruts Scenic World and figured I deserved it for making it this far. For now I'll leave you with this song by Purity Ring. It sounds decent with headphones on. If you like it check out their other song "Ungirthed". I can't speak for their other songs.

The Turning (Epilogue) Pt.5

And he did cut it out. Ha, the epilogue was half the length of the main story. It's like having the round up text at the end of the movie telling you what happened to the characters being most of the movie. Hope you enjoyed the story. It was fun to do. Hopefully some more blobby people storylines will wander past in my imagination. Ill jump on them and tie them down. Then torture them till they give up all their secrets to me. Then I will recount them to you.

The Turning (Epilogue) Pt.4

Don't you just hate it when you've just sat down and someone bothers you with something. You know you're perfectly capable of getting up, but by this time you have committed to it. There's no way you're getting up. You've just done something really hard and you're trying to reward your butt with a smothering or two.
I had to recount the bosses for Terraria. We have now wasted 50% of the bosses available. The next baddy on the list is called the Wall of Flesh. He's pretty much what the name says he is. He spans the height of the entire world. Which makes him literally laterally hard to get around. Ha. Bit of word play there for ya.

The Turning (Epilogue) Pt.3

To much pink!
Talking about colour check out Original Longboards new video. This is for all those people that love the burning reds and oranges of Autumn.

The Turning (Epilogue) Pt.2

The weather is nice and rainy. It's one of those days where you feel good for staying inside. I did go out earlier and I got extremely moist. I was verging on wet even!

The Turning (Epilogue) Pt.1

Oh no! An unspeakable horror!
You can tell I've been really digging my Filter/Render/lighting effects can't you.
I went through the news to find something worth talking about, but everything was just really depressing. So I guess I'll just go ahead and finish the post now.

The Turning Pt.10

Hope you enjoyed that mini story. It kind of got out of hand for me a little. I was only expecting to do 3 parts but then it just kind of kept going. At some point I might go back and recolour the first couple so they're consistent with the others, and then package them up together for the library. Depending on what people think of it that is.

The Turning Pt.9

Ten Doodles in one day isn't that bad. Time to call it a night. See you tomorrow with the final panel (or maybe not, depending on what I dream of between then and now.)

The Turning Pt.8

The idea of an epic journey always appealed to me. especially a noble solo one. I usually just walk to the dairy by myself instead though. Most of life doesn't require me to climb fantastical mystical landscapes.

The Turning Pt.7

over the last couple months I've been rediscovering my love for the Gorillaz. Mostly Demon Days. I only listen to a couple tracks from Plastic Beach. Superfast Jellyfish, Some Kind of Nature, On Melancholy Hill, and Plastic Beach. The latter being a recent favourite. From The Fall I only go for Amarillo, which is what I consider the theme song to my Femur comic.
For this particular strip I played the Kids With Guns remix over and over. It's not often I go on a repeat rampage.

The Turning Pt.6

I watched The Informant! earlier. Meh is the best way to describe it. Whitakere is a fun character. I guess it's the sort of thing you need to be in a certain mood for. If you're ever in the mood for a movie of talking heads, where you're not entirely sure of the protagonists quirks then it's definitely for you. It's a mood people aren't often in. At least it wasn't "more of the same." I guess.
Man, I would make a stink movie reviewer. Each article would be done in the classic kiwi style of "yeah nah yeah nah yeah nah awww naah yeah I guess."

The Turning Pt.5

Lets see how far I can take this idea huh? Nothings happened to me since the last post, and I haven't had any decent stories for a while so I'm going to recount one of my brothers instead.
Players: Ben (brother), Kate (sister in law).
Ben hates it how Kate goes to sleep with lozenges in her mouth. Just because he's petrified of her chocking on it in her sleep. Which I think is a perfectly legitimate reason. Apparently it's happened twice so far. The first time she went to sleep and started gagging on it Ben panicked so much he hit her so hard she was winded. I think this serves two purposes, the first is just your run of the mill violent heimlich maneuver. The second serves as a learning experience to not go to sleep with chockable bits and pieces in your mouth or you'l be smashed awake.

The Turning Pt.4

Aesthetically this series is really jarring. Ah well.
I'm digging the comic "Dungeon" at the moment. I read one a while ago which I thought was good. Becky found some at the library and really got into them, so as a consequence I have ended up reading through them properly. Unfortunatly it's a little difficult to follow, since there is multiple issue ones. All taking place inside the same world, and sometimes being the history of other ones. It parodies DnD quite a bit and the history is just kick ass. I love worlds where you're just thrown into it. You get a glimpse of a culture that is super rich. I say you should check it out. It's got a good story and fun jokes.

The Turning Pt.3

Take all lady advice with a grain of salt. Who knows where that hat guy got his intel. Personal experience or something trivial like that? Pah! Wikipedia probably has an answer for this... They don't. The combined knowledge of 7 billion people can't answer my question! Laaame.

The Turning Pt.2

I've missed these guys and their bland featureless countryside. The world of the blobby people seems to be the only one I can come back to persistently. Probably has something to do with how easy it is to create.
My boss killing on Terraria is now at 42%. I decided to go and solo this guy last night.

The Turning Pt.1

Another one I didn't have any pencils for. But lets be honest. These characters are so basic why would I need pencils. Other than for that last weird ass hand there at the bottom of course. It's just a comb or a weird shovel coming out of her shoulder stub.

YUM
