Sergeant Punk 2

See my previous efforts here.
I'm not as comfortable using thinner lines, but I think it helps a lot. Did a couple extra layers of shading this time as well. Pretty happy with how much I've improved. Every drawing I do feels like it's getting noticeably better. Although maybe if I drew something other than pvc wrapped people I might have something else to say about that.

Sergeant Punk

Last week I took 3 days off, cunningly placed between Easter weekend and Anzac Day. Such a large amount of time spent away from the office offered me the chance to recharge and get back into doing some drawing which doesn't constitute pixel art girls. So after some well deserved time spent on Waiheke Island I decided that I should get better at shading. The top image is my first attempt. Kind of came out dull looking but I was happy with it. The second uses darker lines and has a slightly higher contrast which works well in its favour I think. I didn't really do any post image processing or anything that might have gotten me an even more striking result.

I've drawn a version of my punk chick before, although she's normally white. I guess this new version of her belongs more in Star Trek while the old one is a blatant rip off of Tank Girl.

Photographic Memory Comic

We were discussing the implications of Google Glass and how goofy they were when this quote came up. It had something to do with the parallels between people being able to take photos with their eyes and perfect recall. How creepy is that. Someone could be sitting at home, recollecting you perfectly in their mind while sticking their hands into lukewarm spaghetti meatballs. It chills you to the bone doesn't it.
I'm a wearer of glasses, but I don't entirely like the concept of Glass. Funnily enough Matt got laser eye surgery to get rid of his glasses, but will probably buy a pair. He's an early adopter though. Adopting things early has worked out well for both of us so far pretty good. Except that one kid who we discovered half came from serial killer sperm. I mean, he didn't do anything but we had to get rid of him anyway. You can't keep killer progeny lying around in your own house.
To be fair, if I used Google Now more often with its speak funcionality then I'd probably dig the idea of Glass a whole lot more. At the moment I pull it out to have a laugh with my friends about how it can't understand my slushy unrecognizable New Zealand English.

Juri - Street Fighter

Juri, the South Korean rep for the Street Fighter Series. She's also the games first real villainess.
The SK's don't dig her look apparently, which kind of reminds me of when a korean didn't dig Faiths look as well. Which isn't cool. Oh well, who cares what one dude thinks. Or a whole bunch of one dudes.
Anyway, here's some music.

Ibuki - Street Fighter

I had a surprising amount of fun drawing Ibuki and I'm pretty stoked with the results. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of interesting trivia about her at the moment. She first appeared in Street Fighter III in '97.

C. Viper - Street Fighter

I did her more hot pink than red, which is a bit dumb of me, considering her name is CRIMSON Viper. Too late. There's no way I can quickly go back and tint her hair or anything like that. You'd have to be insane.
She was a character developed to appeal to western audiences. So obviously she had to have sunglasses and a tiny vest. I'm not gonna lie though, that hair is cool. although she looks like the most unapproachable chick in the history of ever.
People have said she looks too cool to be a Street Fighter character, and is more like a cool kid from King of Fighters.
Oh shock horror, a fighting game character that's based on another fighter character. I've definitely never heard of that happening before.

Poison - Street Fighter

Poison is originally from Final Fight the sick cousin of Street Fighter. I was going to talk more about her, then I found this video and realized that there was more going on with the character than I originally thought. So if you wanted to dip into a bit of video game history and learn a bit about regionalised transvestites then you should check it out. Also I won't be drawing Roxy, since it's just Poison with different coloured hair. Yawn.



Most games jumping out of Japan seem to have a ladydude at some point or another, so it's not entirely surprising. Usually they do it in an annoying way by drawing a female and then just once in a blue moon go "SHE'S A MAN LOL".
The only thing that the video above doesn't cover is the fact that Final Fight had the dumbest logo ever.

Cammy - Street Fighter

Possibly the laziest cosplay character you could play as. If you've got a green one piece swimsuit with a turtle neck thing then you're 90% of the way to getting this character down.
Since I don't have anything else to say about Cammy, how about you check out some music instead and pretend that it's the sweet prose that usually oozes from my clammy fingers.

Classy Guy Comic

This one's a true work story, apart from the phallus being exposed. I'm pretty sure my fly is down 90% of the time anyway. The amount of times I've been mooching down the road and noticed it down has got to be way higher than the national average. Then I always get the dilemma of just going with it, and walking proud, or scoot around to face away from the world and look like I'm being inappropriate with myself in public. So I generally make a big show of it. Throwing my hands up in the air in theatrical shock and saying stiltedly "Oh no! My Fly is down" then going in with mock ham handedness so everyone can see exactly what I'm doing while drawing maximum attention to the Faux pas zone. I think I might just start wearing running pants to work.
Your move Matt. Also Plibblesticks is annoying to remember.

Chun Li - Street Fighter

I published this one with a transparent background with a higher res, if anyone was keen to drop this on anything.
Chun Li is an awesome character, and her concept art is always rad. The one thing Street Fighter Excels at is creating dynamic art. I should have gone a little more crazy with her pose, but I had Bandicam running and I didn't want to stretch the video out any longer than it had to be.



Once again, swearing is involved, but is offset by the beautiful music of Tourist.

The Raid 2

I feel like I'd be doing everyone a diservice if I didn't take some time out to tell you that The Raid 2 is amazing. If you've already seen the first movie, then you don't need me to sell it to you, all you need to know is that it is out, and you should get in quick because the first one didn't have that many showings, and I don't know if this one will either. The downside of not being in english or having billions of dollars to throw at hyping the movie. I showed the first one to a bunch of friends on DVD, who were blown away by this movie they had never heard of before. +Ben Wilson went out and got the Blueray and started evangelising it to his friends. He's a reviewer now and managed to go see an early session of the second one, lucky bastard.



It's a different beast from the first movie, which was more a survival horror than anything else. Which is good. It doesn't feel like it's tied down by the layout of the last film, like a lot of franchises are (even sadly the Bourne series falls into this quagmire), the action is still off the chain though. Really no other movie compares. The trailers for the Hollywood movies coming out were instantly forgotten when the movie started. Captain America and big things exploding? Yawn. The Raid series reminds you what action movies should really be like.



Watching it at the cinema or with a lot of friends is the way to go. It's the only set of movies where I have sworn out loud watching it, it's during the car chase, try and figure out which bit. Everyone in the theatre was making noises. Oohs, ahs, and ouches are pretty common. There was the "Yeyaah" from some guy behind us as well. One girl behind us went "OH, goodness." at a particularly intense part.
The whole vibe of the theatre was pretty good. Everyone laughed at the action, not because it was corny, but because it's the best way to not be totally shocked the whole time.



After coming out of the movie everyone spilling out in the foyer were saying "Holy shit" in their own special ways. Some of them even just said "Holy shit".
Anyway, support the movie, go and see it with a bunch of bros, you won't be disappointed I promise.
